TIM SUTTON

Tim read Music at Clare College Cambridge with Timothy Brown, studying conducting with David Parry, and piano with Martin Roscoe and Peter Pettinger. His first musical, written at the age of fourteen, won the prestigious Vivian Ellis Prize, adjudicated by Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Since graduating he has worked extensively in the world of theatre and classical music as freelance composer, musical director and pianist.

In 2004, Tim worked as Chorus Master and Set Conductor for BBC2’s Christmas opera, The Little Prince. He was also arranger and répétiteur for the opening gala of the new Wales Millennium Centre. Tim especially enjoys writing for choirs, and has been commissioned by London Concert Choir, Canticum and Voce. He has worked as a music consultant for the National Youth Music Theatre and Youth Music Theatre:UK, and is a vocal coach at the Actors Centre.

Composition for theatre includes The Skin of Our Teeth (Young Vic 2004), Cinderella (Northampton Royal Theatre 2003), Such Sweet Thunder (Newcastle Theatre Royal, 2003), A Fool and his Money... (Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Repertory), The Gift (Birmingham Door, Kilburn Tricycle) and Bryony Lavery’s A Wedding Story (Birmingham Door, Soho Theatre).

He has worked as a pianist for artists including Kiri Te Kanawa, Leslie Garrett and Ruthie Henshall. Tim also provided the soundtrack for a Doctor Who/Gilbert & Sullivan crossover CD with Colin Baker and Bill Oddie.

Musical direction includes The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (workshop performances, Arts Theatre London and Frederick Loewe Theatre New York).Marat/Sade (Royal National Theatre), Trouble in Tahiti (Battersea Arts Centre), Hymn to Love (Mercury Colchester, Drill Hall, Traverse Edinburgh and BBC Radio 3), Killing Rasputin (Bridewell Theatre), China Song (Plymouth Drum and touring), Marie (Basingstoke, Keswick and touring), The Mikado (Newcastle-under-Lyme), The Mother (Keswick and touring), The Wind in the Willows (Birmingham Rep), The Late Sleepers and Such Sweet Thunder (Newcastle Theatre Royal). Assistant musical direction includes Simon Callow’s revival of The Pajama Game (Victoria Palace) and HMS Pinafore (D’Oyly Carte national tour).
